Mixing and Mastering Explained: What They Are and Why They Matter

A plain-English guide to audio mixing and mastering — what each process does, why both matter, and what to look for in a mix engineer.

Mixing and mastering. You've seen these words on every studio's website, every producer's Instagram bio, and every online course promising to make your music sound professional. But if you're not an audio engineer, these terms can feel abstract — like you know they're important, but you're not entirely sure what they actually involve or why they cost what they do.

I'm JKelly, and I've mixed and mastered projects in my home studio here in Orlando for years, including my latest album The Background. Let me break these concepts down in plain English so you know exactly what you're paying for — and why skipping either one is a mistake.

What Is Mixing?

Mixing is the process of taking all the individual recorded tracks — the drums, bass, guitars, keyboards, vocals, percussion, and whatever else was captured during tracking — and blending them together into a single, cohesive stereo track.

Think of it like cooking. You've got all your ingredients (the individual recordings). Mixing is the process of combining them in the right proportions, at the right temperatures, with the right seasonings to create a dish that works as a whole.

Or think of it as arranging furniture in a room. Every instrument needs its own space. If the couch (bass guitar) and the armchair (kick drum) are both crammed in the same corner, the room feels cluttered and uncomfortable. A good mix gives every element room to breathe while making the whole arrangement feel intentional.

The Core Elements of Mixing

Level balancing. The most fundamental part of mixing is deciding how loud each instrument and vocal sits relative to everything else. Should the vocal be front and center or sit back in the mix? Should the guitar be prominent or supportive? These decisions shape the listener's experience of the song.

EQ (equalization). Every instrument occupies a range of frequencies — bass guitar lives mostly in the low end, cymbals in the highs, vocals in the midrange. But there's a lot of overlap, and without EQ, instruments compete for the same frequency space. EQ lets the engineer carve out room so each element can be heard clearly. Cutting muddiness from a guitar part might be all it takes to let the vocal shine through.

Compression. Compression controls dynamics — the difference between the quietest and loudest moments. A vocalist might whisper one line and belt the next, and without compression, you'd be constantly riding the volume knob. Compression evens things out so the quiet parts are audible and the loud parts don't blow your speakers.

Reverb and delay. These effects add a sense of space and depth. A dry, close-miked vocal can sound flat and lifeless. Add the right reverb, and suddenly it sounds like it was recorded in a beautiful room. Delay creates echoes that add rhythmic interest and texture. These effects are what give a mix dimension — the feeling that sounds exist in a three-dimensional space rather than a flat plane.

Panning. Panning determines where each instrument sits in the stereo field — left, right, or center. Drums typically spread across the stereo image. Bass and lead vocals sit center. Guitars might be panned left and right for width. Smart panning creates the sense that you're sitting in front of a band, with each musician in their own position.

Automation. This is the engineer adjusting levels, effects, and panning throughout the song so the mix evolves with the music. Maybe the reverb on the vocal increases during the chorus for a bigger feel. Maybe the guitar volume dips slightly during the verse to give the vocal room. Automation is what makes a mix feel alive rather than static.

How Long Does Mixing Take?

A straightforward mix — say, an acoustic guitar and vocal track with minimal additional elements — might take three to four hours. A dense, full-production mix with thirty or more tracks can take a full day or longer. Most professional mixes also include revision rounds where the artist listens and requests adjustments.

What Is Mastering?

If mixing is about making the individual song sound right, mastering is about making it sound right everywhere and in context.

Mastering is the final step in audio production. A mastering engineer takes the finished stereo mix and applies subtle processing to optimize it for distribution — whether that's Spotify, Apple Music, vinyl, or CD.

What Mastering Actually Does

Loudness optimization. Streaming platforms have loudness standards (measured in LUFS). A mastered track hits the appropriate loudness level so it doesn't sound quieter or louder than other songs on a playlist. This might sound simple, but doing it without squashing the dynamics of the song requires skill and experience.

Tonal balance. The mastering engineer ensures the frequency balance is even and translates well across different playback systems. Your mix might sound great on your studio monitors but thin on earbuds, or boomy in a car. Mastering addresses these translation issues so the song sounds good on everything from a phone speaker to a high-end sound system.

Stereo enhancement. Subtle widening or focusing of the stereo image to make the track feel expansive without sounding unnatural.

Consistency across an album or EP. If you're releasing multiple songs together, mastering ensures they all sit at a consistent volume and tonal character. Without mastering, track one might sound warm and full while track five sounds bright and thin — even if both mixes are individually good.

Format preparation. The mastering engineer exports the final files in the exact specifications required by your distributor — sample rate, bit depth, file format, and metadata.

Can You Skip Mastering?

Technically, yes. Practically, no — not if you want your music to sound professional.

An unmastered mix released to streaming platforms will almost always sound quieter, thinner, or less polished than the songs surrounding it on a playlist. Listeners might not be able to articulate why your song sounds "off," but they'll feel it — and they'll skip to the next track.

Mastering is also the last quality check. A good mastering engineer catches problems the mix engineer might have missed — a harsh frequency buildup, a muddy low end, a stereo imbalance. They're listening with fresh ears in a calibrated room, and that perspective is invaluable.

DIY Mixing vs Hiring a Professional

With the tools available in 2026, it's entirely possible to mix your own music. DAWs like Logic Pro, Ableton, and Pro Tools come with excellent built-in plugins, and there are countless tutorials on YouTube and online courses.

But here's the honest truth: mixing well takes years of practice. It's not just about knowing which knobs to turn — it's about developing your ears to hear subtle problems and knowing how to fix them. It's about understanding how a mix will translate to different playback systems. It's about taste, restraint, and knowing when a mix is done.

Mix It Yourself When:

  • You're recording demos or rough sketches that aren't for commercial release
  • You're actively learning production and want to develop your skills
  • Your budget genuinely can't accommodate a professional mixer
  • The production is simple (solo instrument and vocal, for example)

Hire a Professional When:

  • The song is for commercial release on streaming platforms
  • The production is complex with multiple instruments and vocal layers
  • You want the track to compete sonically with professionally released music
  • You've been going back and forth on your mix for weeks and can't get it right (this is a sign you're too close to the material)

What to Look For in a Mix Engineer

If you decide to hire a professional, here's what matters.

Portfolio and genre alignment. Listen to their previous work. Does it sound like what you're going for? A great hip-hop mixer might not be the best choice for your folk album. Genre experience matters because each genre has its own mixing conventions and listener expectations.

Communication style. You'll be sending notes back and forth during revisions. Look for someone who listens, asks good questions, and doesn't get defensive about feedback. The mix should serve your vision, not the engineer's ego.

Revision policy. How many revision rounds are included? What counts as a revision? Get this clear upfront to avoid awkward conversations later.

Turnaround time. How long will they take? If you're on a release timeline, make sure your mixer can deliver within your schedule.

File delivery and format. Make sure they'll deliver the final mix in the format you need — typically a high-resolution WAV file suitable for mastering.

Common Mixing Mistakes Beginners Make

If you're mixing your own music, watch out for these pitfalls.

Too much low end. Beginner mixes almost always have too much bass. It sounds powerful in headphones but turns to mud on most speakers. Use a reference track to calibrate your low end, and check your mix on multiple playback systems.

Over-processing vocals. It's tempting to pile effects on vocals — heavy reverb, extreme compression, aggressive EQ. But vocals are the most important element in most songs, and over-processing makes them sound unnatural. Start subtle and add only what's needed.

Not using reference tracks. Pull up a professionally mixed song in a similar genre and compare it to your mix regularly. This reality check prevents your ears from drifting — after hours of mixing, your perspective shifts, and things that sound normal to you might sound strange to fresh ears.

Mixing too loud. Your ears lie to you at high volumes — everything sounds better when it's loud. Mix at a moderate, conversational volume. If the mix sounds good quiet, it'll sound great loud.

Ignoring the low mids. The 200-500 Hz range is where muddiness lives. It's also where the warmth of many instruments lives. Learning to manage this frequency range is one of the biggest skill jumps in mixing.

How I Approach Mixing

When I mix a project — whether it's a client's song or a track for my own album — I start with the most important element, which is usually the vocal or the lead melody. I get that sounding right in isolation, then build the mix around it.

I work in passes. The first pass is rough — just getting levels and panning in the ballpark. The second pass is where the real work happens: EQ, compression, effects, automation. Then I step away. I'll come back the next day with fresh ears and make adjustments.

For The Background, I mixed every track myself in my home studio. Twelve songs, each one requiring its own approach and attention. Some were dense, layered productions. Others were stripped back and intimate. The mixing process is where each song found its final identity.
